We decided to spend the day on a small hike from Cala Blanca south east from Xábia, and out to the cliff Cap Prim visible from Cala Blanca. Starting of where we parked at Cala Blanca its already intriguing to stop and spend the day here. On the rocks of Cala Blanca people are enjoying the sun, and for the ones where the sun is to harsh, there is a nice spot right under a natural stone arched. In the little bay surrounded by marlstone and clay, its possible to jump in the crystal clear water and snorkel around while looking at the different species of fish that swims around. Besides the beautiful fish there is also a few sea urchins to look out for. It’s also a good idea to bring water shoes when going in and out of the water to avoid the pain when stepping on a slightly sharp rock.
We continue further south east from Cala Blanca where shortly after we reach La Caleta. Also here we stop to admire the white cliffside with small bays in between, reaching all the way out to Cap Prim. From La Caleta we continue on a small road through a forest area and on to a local road with more traffic.
Walking along the local road, we reach Creu del Portitxol where you can get a view of the island Portitxol and the north west cliffsides of Cap Prim. From here there are different hiking trails to choose from. Continuing further south east will bring you too the cozy little bay Playa Portichol. The bay here is surrounded by white and blue houses that contributes to the bay’s aesthetics. The beach is not sandy, so ones again bring the water shoes. It’s also possible to drive down to Playa Portichol.
But today the intention was to reach Cap Prim, so we went east instead. The trail from here is uneven, surrounded by pine trees and rosemary bushes with singing cicadas. Along the way, we stopped several places on the route to admire the beauty of the coasts. There were a few small paths leading away from the main route. Following one of these takes you all the way out to the edge of the cliff. Looking down from here we see the water rolling un top of several rocks peeking out of the water. The further we got out, the steeper the cliffside. Looking south east from here we can see the island Portitxol and a beautiful and particular line of rocks in the water.
We reach Cap Prim, just 59 meters above sea level, and was kindly welcomed by a swarm of dragonflies. We took a lot of pictures of the dragonflies and in particular one red dragonfly seemed to enjoy the spotlight, giving us different posed like a model. With another dragonfly, my camera had a hard time focusing. By the time I didn’t understand why, but it seemed that my camera had caught something I didn’t see myself, which i would notice later when looking through the pictures.
After we had enjoyed the beautiful views from Cap Prim we went to the bay Cala Sardinera on the north west side of Cap Prim. Here there was a little white and pink house where it seems that the young local kids hangout. The bay is filled with stones and what I believe is washed up bamboo. Here we went for a swim and snorkeling, and true to its name there was lots of sardines. I tried to make a harpoon with one of the bamboo sticks and a sharp stone, but unfortunately I underestimated the fishes and overestimated my skills as a fish hunter.
After the swim, snorkeling and fish hunting we went back to Cala Blanca where we started the hike, and we decided to go and eat dinner in the bay of Xábia on the restaurant La Bohême. Here we looked through the photos from the trip. To my surprise the camera had taken a picture of an animal I didn’t even notice myself. From earlier when we were on Cap Prim taking pictures of dragonflies, my camera caught a less intriguing insect. A big wasp spider right behind the beautiful dragonfly, hanging in its net, scouting for pray. The wasp spider was around the size of a little finger, which to me is a pretty big spider. I’m happy I didn’t see it while taking pictures.
